Castle Aulencia
Aulencia Castle is situated on a hill at the top that forms the junction of the rivers Aulencia and Guadarrama.
Belongs to the municipality of Villanueva de la Cañada and next to it is the European Space Astronomy Centre ( ESAC ) and urbanization Villafranca del Castillo, which owes its name to Castle Aulencia and takes the place of an old town of the same name . Also the castle is also known as Castillo de Villafranca.
Aulencia Castle is a small building consisting of a main body, a square, about 25 feet square, with a keep 20 meters tall. It is protected by a barbican with cylindrical towers.
The castle is of Arabic origin and there is little documentary references to it. During the civil war was used as a fort during the Battle of Brunete, so that the castle was attacked whose traces can be seen on the walls.
Currently owned by the Ballesteros family, which acquired it in 1918 and is located inside a fenced hunting preserve, which prevents close to the walls. However a dirt road from the entrance to the ESAC, surrounds the promontory of the castle, so you can view it from virtually anywhere.
According to several sources, the castle is in ruins progressive, and although you can access the parade ground and the ground floor of the tower, the walls are undermined and eventually collapsing if not undertaken its restoration.
